Shri Niladri Shekhar Bose (born 1940-1992 in Kolkata) was a man of diverse talents and artistic curiosity. He excelled academically, earning a BSc in Chemistry from Vidyasagar College and a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University, where he was also a University Blue in cricket.
Shri Bose chose to pursue his artistic interests in Kolkata, declining a central government career. He became a professor of Civil Engineering, obtaining Master's degrees in Civil Engineering and Technical Teacher Education, and was a member of the Indian Institute of Engineers. He was a respected teacher of both engineering and elocution.
His true passion was art and literature. A polymath, he began with singing, winning the Murphy Radio music contest, and performed in commercial theatre with leading artists. Influenced by his wife, Smt. Shuvra Bose, he became deeply involved in recitation, learning from Shri Kaji Sabyasachi and experimenting with stage performance, choreography, and "Kavya Natok". He was also a poet, and often recited his own works.
In the late 1970s, he founded the Abriti Academy to promote his elocution methods and establish a scientific approach to the art. He advocated for elocution as a distinct performing art through his extensive writings on poetry, recitation, and the Bengali language. The West Bengal government has instituted an annual lifetime recognition award for elocutionists in his name as well as his guru’s, Shri Kaji Sabyasachi – a rare honour indeed.
He passed away in Hyderabad on September 18, 1992, due to aplastic anaemia.
